Early Years Foundation Stage

Children in reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum.
There is a strong emphasis on supporting children to become effective learners by providing
opportunities for playing and exploring, active learning and creating and thinking critically.

The initial focus is on developing the three prime areas of learning that are most
essential for children’s readiness for future learning and healthy development.
These prime areas are Personal Social and Emotional Development;
Physical Development; Communication and Language.
The four specific areas of learning then build on these prime areas and these are
Literacy; Mathematics; Understanding of the World; Expressive Arts and Design.

Key Stages 1 and 2

The children in Year 1 to Year 6 follow the subjects in the National Curriculum.
They are provided with a varied and exciting range of learning opportunities
that are carefully planned to meet their individual learning needs.
English, Maths, Science, RE and ICT have a very high profile as core subjects of the National Curriculum.
We teach a few foundation subjects discretely such as PE, Music, Languages and PSHE.
The remaining subjects (History, Geography, Art, Design Technology and Citizenship)
are taught through cross-curricular topics.
Our topics are carefully planned to engage, inspire and motivate all children.

Basic Skills are taught discretely on a daily basis and include:

  • Phonics, reading and spelling
  • Grammar and comprehension
  • Writing, including presentation of work
  • Counting
  • Calculation, including mental calculation

Teachers plan for a range of groups and abilities within all curriculum subjects.

Our approach to teaching is varied and includes individual and collaborative group work as well as whole class teaching.

All classes have a dedicated Teaching Assistant working with groups of pupils and supporting teachers.

We help individual children through 1-2-1 support, intervention programmes and enrichment activities.

Champion Learners

Through our unique  Champion Learners Programme
the school encourages children to be actively involved in their learning.
We promote a positive “I can” attitude in everything that we do and
teach the skills that enable our children to become confident, independent learners.

Christian values

Christian Values underpin our work throughout the school.
Our curriculum is designed to ensure that there are plenty of opportunities
to develop children’s personal,
social and emotional skills.

We encourage our pupils to treat others with care, respect and consideration
and always praise and reward good behaviour.
